Civility Reigns in Haines

At last evenings Haines Borough Assembly meeting there were several items which one might have expected heated discussion. Heli Skiing GPS records and Chilkat Center were especially potential hot topics. When they came up there was good in depth discussion with no one loosing their temper.

The agenda was long yet things went reasonably well. Assembly member Norm Smith on was via telephone. At times his input was inappropriate and bad language. One might conclude he had to much Kool Aid.

Last on the agenda was an executive session to discuss the managers evaluation and contract. So the public had to leave.

Chilkat Center ??

December 27 Haines Borough Government Services Committee met to discuss the Chilkat Center.
Chilkat Center has long needed repairs especially the roof. Rep. Bill Thomas had commented publicly that he would try to get an appropriation to repair the roof if the borough would return ownership back to AIA.
With about 20 in attendance including Rep. Bill Thomas and Lee Heinmiller pres. AIA. There was quite a discussion about what to do and where to get funding.
In the end chairman Steve Vick said he would recommend to the borough assembly that they look at funding sources to repair the Chilkat Center. That in effect took Rep. Thomas offer off the table.

Solid Waste Management

Important; See Mayor Scott's article on Solid Waste Management in Haines Borough.
                             http://2011mayoralcandidate.blogspot.com/

Haines Port Development Steering Committee

December 21 was the first meeting of the Haines Port Development Steering Committee. They have a daunting task. First task is to hire a consultant to check the current condition of the Lutak Dock, then look into future opportunities.
As has been reported the Yukon is loaded with minerals that need to be shipped to market. Yukon and interior Alaska need a port for general freight and eastern Alaska minerals. All these things can generate revenue and jobs for Haines.
Near the end of January borough manager and a couple committee members will travel to Vancouver to a mines convention ( round up ). That should give a real idea as to what is needed.
The work the committee does will have a very long range effect on Haines. Get involved let the committee know your views.

Borough Assembly Meetings on TV

As many of you know I video record all Haines Borough Assembly meetings. Haines Cable TV  as a public service televises the meetings at 7pm, Wednesdays,  cable channel 6.  We also try to record and televise as many committee meetings as we can.
We are looking into ways to create a Haines channel to televise meetings and happenings live. Anyone who can help please contact me or Haines Cable TV.

The start of Haines Happenings

We are attempting to bring together what is going on in Haines. It's the start of a New Year so let's start to bring Haines together. There are always many things going on in Haines; Socially, politically, economically.
Our local government is facing many challenges. Some are figuring the needed infrastructure maintenance and repairs. Facility maintenance and repairs. The challenges of operating our many facilities. Then there are the decisions that will impact our lives and economy for many years to come.
We have a large enough community to do most of what any of us want to do. So let's work TOGETHER to help each other make Haines the community we can all be proud of.
