Haines Port Development Council

                                 Synchronizing the Port of Haines with the Future.

The Council proposes to be the hub of an information network using the Internet and social media to synchronize the Port of Haines, Alaska with the future of the region. It is composed of trans-boundary private and government entities with a mutual interest in the Port of Haines and its strategic assets and potential beneficial uses.

The Council membership of U.S./Canada interests will be related to O&G and Mining developments in the greater Pacific Northwest as well as interests in increased electrical power production, general manufacturing opportunities and transshipment infrastructures as they relate to all types of commerce serviced by the Port of Haines at its various port facilities.

The non-dues general membership will be open to all those with a direct role and/or constructive, positive interest in the future operations of the Port of Haines, Alaska. A Council Board will act as the executive steering committee for all Council activities.

· “Dugout” is a documentary that show the healing process of 19 Yukon carvers as they created a 30-foot long red cedar dugout canoe

· The carvers were lead by Tlingit Master Carver, Wayne Price, who led the Paddling Home Project

· The carvers spent 10 weeks on an island on the Yukon River in an environment where they could just focus on their art

Weighing in With State Agencies

Should the Assembly take the time and spend the effort to study and comment on plans proposed in the Haines Borough by state agencies? Some say, "No." Some say, "Let the state agencies and agents do their jobs. What do we know, for example, about timber sales?"

I have a different opinion. I believe that it is very important for the Haines Borough Assembly to consider the local impacts of activity sponsored by others. When items such as the proposed FERC license for the Connelly Lake hydro project, the Juneau Access Road, the Southeast Regional Integrated Resource Plan, the 13 Mile Timber Sale, the Fall/Winter AMHS ferry schedule come before the Assembly, it gives the whole community an opportunity to be reminded of these proposals and to offer their own comments to the Assembly.

This coming Tuesday, March 13, the Assembly will consider the Southeast Regional Integrated Resource Plan and the Haines State Forest 13 Mile Timber Sale. The Assembly may also weigh in on the proposed Fall/Winter AMHS ferry schedule.

Comments must be received by AEA no later than 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012.

During this public comment period, and as part of the Southeast Conference mid-session summit on March 13, 2012 in Juneau, there will be a technical conference on the Southeast Alaska Integrated Resource Plan. This one-day will be co-hosted by Southeast Conference and the Alaska Energy Authority. The agenda will be published on the AEA and SEC websites in the near future. The agenda will include a structured presentation of the plan by the consultant Black and Veatch. Other presentations will fully explain this regional energy plan, whose focus has been power and heating, with equal emphasis in the urban and rural areas of Southeast Alaska. The timing of this educational conference is near the end of the public comment period after the public has had a chance to read and consider in detail the elements of this regional plan with addition post-

permaculture. Handout Gaia's Garden; group activity. Hand out copies

of Cooperative Extension guidelines on varieties for Southeast Alaska

and begin group contributions to HGG.  Group activity with seed

catalogues so everyone can order (and share) seeds.  Assign homework

of mapping out gardening areas.
